What are Different Kinds of Scholarships?

A scholarship is a financial aid for an individual student scholar to help in the furthering of their education. Scholarships can be classified into categories and oftentimes, the way possible scholars are chosen depends on the kind of purpose & values the scholarship donor reflects. Listed below are the 6 General Scholarship categories. Merit Based Scholarships --recipients of these scholarships are being determined by the student's capabilities: be it athletic, academic, or artistic. This is awarded to best promote the student's study of the subject he or she is excelling in. Most large scholarship giving bodies base their decisions on merit. Need Based Scholarships -- this is a type of scholarship in which financial aid is granted to those students who can't afford to fully shoulder the expenses they'll incur in the schools they were enrolled into. It may take academics into account, but the main thing the bestowing party will look at for someone to qualify is financial need. Many schools offer this kind of scholarship to its students. Most of the time, this is the only way the not-so well- off students can attend costly schools without worrying much about the tuition fees. Athletic Scholarships-- Most universities offer this kind of scholarships to students who really excel in a given sport. Most popular athletic scholarships are given to students who excel in basketball, football, wrestling, gymnastics and the likes. Institutional Based Scholarships- a scholarship awarded by a specific university or college to someone who plans to attend that school. Ethnicity Based Scholarships-- applicants for this financial grant will first be qualified in terms of race, national origin or religion. After the qualification was done, other factors will kick in to determine the final recipients of the scholarship. Examples of ethnicity based scholarships include the Jewish Federation Academic Scholarship Program, Hispanic Scholarship Fund and the American Indian Scholarship Fund. General Scholarships--these are the ones granted by different bestowing organizations or parties whose categories will not fit those cited above. Example, a particular organization grants partial or full scholarships to their employees' children. Or some companies reward students with scholarships for exemplary conduct shown at any given point in time. It can also be a scholarship for pageant contestants, left handed people, physically & mentally challenged and many others more. There are a lot of scholarship giving bodies out there if someone is serious enough to search and apply for it in time.
